Interval Chart Generator
This is one of my favorite little gems for ear training. In my experience, students learn to recognize intervals faster if they can relate them to songs that they know. Personally, I prefer the “NBC” chime for an ascending Major 6th, and “Hey Jude” or the “Star Spangled Banner” for a descending minor 3rd, but what if my student isn’t familiar with those tunes?
The creators of EarMaster 6 have a great free tool on their website where you can create interval listening charts with your student. They can select which songs they want to use for interval training, fill out the chart, and then you can print them directly from the site. Of course, there are a couple of intervals with very few song choices, but it’s fun to use the “Simpson’s theme song” for a Tritone!
P.S. Young students will appreciate all the up-to-date choices on this site. There’s even a Harry Potter reference for a Perfect 4th!

This is so neat! Perfect for my students preparing for theory test this weekend. Thanks for sharing!
Isn’t it cool? I’d like to have my students create charts, and then print them on colored card stock and display them around the studio. It will be interesting to see what students pick! I also think this is a great way to demonstrate the difference between major/minor intervals for beginners.
Thank you for this Chart. I have been looking for references for certain intervals to teach my younger students. I have some suggestions though for some of intervals.
Perfect 5th- Ascending (Star wars theme)
Major 6th- Ascending (NBC Chime)
Minor 6th- Ascending (The Entertainer by Scott Joplin)
Major 3rd- Ascending (Ding-Dong, almost like a doorbell ring)
Hi Sarah! I’m glad you enjoyed the chart. Did you try making your own through the links provided? I think several of your suggestions were possible answers in the Interval Chart Generator. Here’s a direct link: http://www.earmaster.com/products/free-tool/interval-song-chart-generator.html
