Earth Day Recital Ideas

Earth Day Recital Ideas

For the past several years, we’ve made a point to donate to local community organizations as part of our recitals.  Since this year’s recital happens to fall on Earth Day, I thought it would be appropriate to find some way that my students could give back to their environment

After doing a little bit of research, I decided to swap out my normal student gift of long stemmed roses for something more environmentally friendly.  This year when I call my students back up to the stage for their final bow, I’ll be handing them a packet of wildflower seeds and a plantable seed paper butterfly.

These seed packets come from American Meadows. They had lots of different Earth Day themed designs. I especially loved the earth shaped seed papers! (And I love that they’re made out of recycled paper and natural, plant-based dyes.)

Cultivate a Brighter Future

To celebrate Earth Day, I’ll be challenging my students to plant wildflowers in our local area to attract and feed our pollinators. As part of this challenge, I plan on featuring some pollinator facts on the backs of our (recycled paper) recital programs. Here are some cool facts that I found from the Department of Defense Natural Resources Program.

How Can You Help Pollinators?

  • Create a backyard pollinator garden.
  • Volunteer to help create a pollinator garden at a local school.
  • Reduce or eliminate pesticide use in sensitive areas.
  • Control invasive plants using an integrated pest management approach.
  • Provide windbreaks and nesting areas, such as bat boxes or sites with low vegetation for bee nests.
  • Restore land with native plants that attract pollinators, and integrate pollinator-friendly plants into gardens.

Other Earth Day Recital Ideas:

How else can you incorporate Earth Day into your recitals? There are so many ways! I’ve had some great conversations with my fellow teachers about this in online forums. I’ve also been chatting it up with my students during lessons. Here are some other ideas my students and I came up with:

  • Use recycled paper for your recital programs.
  • Raise money for a local group that cleans up the environment in your area.
  • Encourage your students and audience members to take part of the Billion Acts of Green
  • Use biodegradable cups and plates for your recital reception.
  • Have earth-themed recital treats
  • Invite a local environmental organization do a short presentation at your recital.
  • Raise money to plant a tree at a local park.
  • Teach your audience an Earth Day song
