Finding Brain Space as an Online Music Teacher

After weeks of online teaching, you’re probably craving a pace that isn’t so hectic and tiring. I see you, friend. With my blue blockers on. That’s what this broadcast is about!

Finding the brain space you need to be an online teacher.

COVID-19 changed a lot of things. But what DIDN’T change was all the responsibilities that come with running a small business. (And the pressure we put on ourselves as education professionals.)

As a small business owner you have to make your own rules, set your own hours, and make all the decisions. Just the simple things feel like they take more brain power than they used to, because we’re asking our brains to do so much.  You’ve had to make a LOT more decisions than normal.

And WHO do we put last when making those decisions?

Ourselves.

This week’s broadcast is about creating the brain space you need to run your (newly online) biz. Because we don’t want your biz  to run you.

Show Notes from the Broadcast:

  1. Make literal space between lessons. You have my full permission to shift half of your schedule earlier or later. Give yourself a half hour break in the middle of your day so that you can get up, stretch, do whatever you need to do, and get your eyes away from the screen. Send out a simple email stating the change, and make sure to follow-up with personal touches via phone or text.
  2. Staying More than 1 Step Ahead. If we’re struggling to stay afloat, it’s often because we’re only thinking about the very next thing that happens. The pressure that builds up from being in this “survival mode” can be hard to escape. Set aside some time to figure out more than just a few hours into the future. You’ll thank yourself later.
  3. Create Decompressing Routines. Maybe it’s finding some quiet time in the morning. Or building in a brisk walk before / after you teach. Clean up your studio at the end of the day even if you don’t want to. Find some small ways that you can relieve the pressure and start fresh.

I hope you found this broadcast useful! There were some fabulous teacher #takeaways in the comments area, so be sure to check them out.
