Circle of 5ths Pentascale Chart

Just a quick “Freebie Friday” post here. Not feeling so hot. This is day 2 of recovering from the stomach flu. On the bright side: I’ve graduated from pedialyte and jello to pedialyte and plain rice… hooray!

BRAT-Diet-Drink

Gotta love the BRAT diet…

Before I take off for an afternoon of couch time and naps, I thought I’d share a resource I made earlier this week. It’s been on my mind for a while now!

Three of the most popular freebies on my blog are my major and minor chromatic pentascale charts and my minor pentatonic blues scales chart. Charts are useful for teaching scales to piano and voice students (especially if you have visual learners).

This time around, I wanted to recreate my pentascale chart so that it followed the Circle of Fifths:

I created this so my students would have an easy visual reference while practicing warm-ups at home. One of the most popular warm-ups we’ve been doing in piano lessons lately is the Circle of Fifths Warm-Up. Maybe you saw my first post about this? Here’s another video of this warm-up in action:

The backing track we used here was “Smooth Rock” on the iReal Pro app. You can read more about how to do this warm-up using the iReal Pro app in a detailed post on Leila Viss’s blog – Use iReal Pro to Circle the Keys in Fives.

Haven’t gotten into using backing tracks yet? Leila Viss and Bradley Sowash are offering a webinar called Groove Your Theory on April 22nd. Check it out by clicking the image below. I’m really excited about attending this webinar event!
